MARTINSBURG, W.Va.—A man initially charged with malicious wounding after a Hagerstown man was injured in a fight last week now faces a voluntary manslaughter charge after the victim died, according to court records.
A warrant charging Troy Michael Butts, 30, in the death of Keith Douglas was issued Wednesday by Berkeley County Magistrate JoAnn Overington, the court records said.
Douglas, 43, died Thursday. Police said he was declared brain dead shortly after the fight on May 24, the records said.
Police initially reported that Douglas was 48.
Butts, who was incarcerated at Eastern Regional Jail Wednesday night on $150,000 bond, is due to appear in magistrate court for a preliminary hearing Thursday.
He was initially charged with two counts of malicious wounding in the fight. A second victim, Joseph Carter, also of Hagerstown, was treated at Winchester Medical Center for a possible broken nose that he suffered in the altercation, according to court documents.
The fight at 250 Appomattox Drive was said to have stemmed from allegations that Butts had stolen money from the two men, the documents said.
