  3. Hanukkah celebrated

It's the first day and second night of Hanukkah. And, whether at home or in synagogues, those of the Jewish faith are taking time to observe the 8-day holiday in unique and festive ways. There are many customs associated with Hanukkah. From the lighting of the Menorah to food, it's a festive and exciting time. Hanukkah is also known as the Festival of lights.  It includes many customs. The word Hanukkah means rededication. In this case, it has to do with a temple that was rededicated in Jerusalem after the Maccabees defeated the Syrian-Greek rulers. We spoke with Rabbi Fabian Werbin of the Beth Israel Synagogue in Roanoke. “They needed oil for 8 days and they found a flask of oil. Instead of lasting one day it lasted for 8 days,” said Werbin.  And that is what eight of the menorah candles represent. Another is used to light them. Hanukkah is a time where traditional dishes take center stage.
