CALEXICO --- Calexico Police are asking the public's help in locating a hit and run driver suspected of striking a woman down unconscious today as she walked on her way home, an officer said today.

The 39-year-old woman, whose name Calexico Police Officer Sean Acuna declined to release, had dropped off her daughter at Kennedy Gardens Elementary School when she walked south on Rockwood Avenue and started to cross to Espinosa Street when she was struck less than a block away from her home, Acuna said.

The woman suffered a laceration to her liver and injuries to her head, back and chest during the incident that was reported at about 8:30 a.m., Acuna said. But police didn't treat the incident as a hit and run case until 10:59 a.m. when they learned from the woman that she recalled a black vehicle being involved, the officer said.

The woman was treated at El Centro Regional Medical Center before she was flown out to a San Diego-area hospital where she underwent emergency surgery on her liver, Acuna said.

Acuna reasoned that the area is often busy and that it's highly likely someone might have seen what occurred. Anyone with information can call the Calexico Police Department and ask for Acuna or any other officer at 760-768-2140.
