DALLAS—Stories of horror and hope still pour out of Haiti. A big chunk of that hope is coming from seemingly small offers of aid that are adding up to millions. It started with five and ten dollar text message donations. Now, corporate America is stepping up its efforts.
"We were all trying to think what would be the best thing as a company so we could contribute," said Bobbie Candas, an assistant manager at the Marmi shoe store in North Texas.
So, Marmi is teaming up with a charity organization called Soles4Souls.
If you donate a gently used pair of shoes, Marmi will match that with a new pair of shoes and send them to Haiti.
"We can take women's shoes, children's shoes, men's shoes and all kinds of shoes and our company in turn will donate a pair of our new shoes to people in need as well," said Candas.
Soles4Soles hopes to donate a million pairs of shoes to Haiti relief efforts.
"Well, with the pictures, its hard to figure out a way to help out," said Tina Moore who was shopping at Northpark Center Tuesday night. "I think this is a really great way to help out if you have some old shoes at home. It's a good way to put those out there and have a company give out some new shoes as well.
Simple steps and its all adding up to giant leaps in humanitarian aid for a nation trampled by tragedy.
