Each month Channel Two News awards a scholarship to a deserving student. This month's "Fund the Future" winner comes from Golovin a village 70 miles east of Nome.
While his friends dreamed of leaving home, Robert Moses, Jr. spends a lot of time thinking about ways to stay.
“I know everybody here and I'll always call this place home,” Moses said.
As a kid, Moses explored the grassy hills, learned how to fish in Golovin Bay and still likes to watch the boats come in.
Robert plans to approach college much the same way, first exploring his options while keeping a curiosity for learning.
“I know a lot of people expect a whole lot out of me. And I expect a whole lot out of myself too,” Moses said.
Moses graduated as a UA Scholar and his high school's valedictorian.
The community school is one of the smallest in the district -- despite that the students excel in just about everything.
Teachers believe family support is the reason their school has high graduation numbers and an outstanding attendance record.
“People in Golovin really tend to come together especially when it comes to the kids,” his Aunt Rachel Olson said. “As far as the kids go the community stands behind them 100 percent”
His many scholarships should cover his tuition, but Moses still works saving money for his family.
The 18-year-old often talks about college, though he skipped fall enrollment this year. He plans to go to UAF next spring.
Moses wants to teach middle school science and math in Golovin and down the line he'd like to be a village leader.
