  3. Recipe Finder: Christmas fruitcake

Marie Racine of Huntley, Ill., was looking for a recipe she had lost for making fruitcake that contained dried apricots and Brazil nuts. I did not receive any reader responses to her query, so I decided to do a little research. The recipe world is loaded...

  9. Pie goes free-form

Nothing celebrates summer quite like a fresh pie. It's as if we're taking the best the season has to offer -- vibrantly colored produce practically bursting with flavor and nurtured to ripeness under a hot sun -- and wrapping that bounty in a tender, flaky crust. Like a gift.

  17. Picnic ready

Casual parties, dinners on the deck, family reunions and picnics populate our summer calendar. I usually volunteer to bring the salad primarily so that I am not tempted to overindulge. Over the years, I have built up quite the salad recipe repertoire, but I'm always on the lookout for more ideas. So when my daughter and I tasted a warm farro and calamari salad at Napolese, her favorite Indianapolis pizzeria, we immediately decided to add it to our rotation.

  21. Market Watch: Kinnows make a sweet citrus juice

Amid the seasonal abundance of apricots, cherries, peaches and Boysenberries, it is hard to imagine that a citrus juice would become an object of craving, but few shoppers have any idea just how sweet and flavorful late-harvest Kinnow mandarins can be. Their juice, squeezed fresh at markets by Lucio Trinidad of Piru, is shockingly deep yellow-orange, almost syrupy in texture, and intensely aromatic and sweet, with just enough balancing acidity to forestall insipidity.
