1. Coat drive for the needy

If you've been outside lately, you know it's cold out there! That's why a local business is holding a coat drive. The folks at Corned Beef and Company in downtown Roanoke have collected more than 30 coats and jackets so people can keep warm this winter. They could surely use some more donations and say they'll continue the drive for at least a few more weeks. The jackets and coats will be given to the Salvation Army. Corned Beef & Co. is located on South Jefferson Street in downtown Roanoke.

  7. Holy Food!: Kosher and Its Imitators in Connecticut

What exactly is kosher? The short answer is a religious certification given to any cooked or processed food that an observant Jew is permitted to eat. A satisfying answer in detail is not easy, so a visual aid may help: picture three identical matzo balls, each floating in its own bowl of soup: one at Shuman's in Bloomfield, the second at Gold's in Westport, and the third at Michael's in Middletown. The first is kosher, the second is "kosher-style", and the third is just an unaffiliated bowl of matzo ball soup. In addition to these three states of existence, the matzo ball itself straddles yet another stratum of culinary holiness: kosher-for-Passover knoshing.

  21. Eight lucky cocktail specials for St. Patrick's Day

If you're donning the green on St. Patrick's Day and stepping out for a drink or two, then know that there's more to celebrating the holiday than downing green beer or straight Irish whiskey. Try honoring St. Patrick with a swank cocktail -- other than an Irish Car Bomb. Not that there's anything wrong with a shot of Jameson or a little Bailey's in one's Guinness (or is there?). But with all the shamrock-hued cocktails out there, you might as well try a jalapeño-tinged margarita, some rum muddled with fresh herbs, whiskey mixed with vermouths and bitters and mint syrup, or maybe green chartreuse with tropical juices.

  23. Where to celebrate St. Patrick's Day in L.A. area — no blarney

Mistakes are the portals of discovery. At least that's what James Joyce, one of Ireland's most famous writers — and a notorious drinker — once said. The phrase rings particularly true on St. Patrick's Day, the saucy Irish holiday that is marked by an epic consumption of alcohol and plenty of corned beef and cabbage. To honor Joyce, we make the annual mistake of drinking too much and discover that we wake up feeling green. Here are some of our favorite places to make those mistakes and many others this Sunday — framed by the back of a cab, of course.
