  3. Weekend Escape: Kick back at Oahu's Turtle Bay Resort

    The gilt-trimmed high-rises of Waikiki offer a seductive escape from L.A. But those who rent a car &mdash; a convertible, please &mdash;- can find a simpler side of Oahu on the North Shore, an hour or so away, where locals and tourists carry surfboards instead of Louis Vuitton purses (real or fake) and debates about where to eat focus on which food trucks serve the best garlic shrimp. Residents call it "the country," and they want to keep it that way.

  9. All fat, no cattle

    <img src="http://interactive.sun-sentinel.com/images/restaurantstars/2halfstars.gif" alt="" />
    I get why some folks love Smashburger. The restaurant chain uses never-frozen Certified Angus Beef, which is literally "smashed" into the shape of a burger on a 400-degree flat grill to "sear in the juicy flavor." The beef is tasty. But after two visits...

  11. Second time's the charm

    Leftovers &mdash; like whatever's in that green jar near the back of the third shelf &mdash; can be a dreaded fridge-horror specter past their prime as soon as they hit the Tupperware. But oh, those beautiful exceptions! Beef bourguignon, lamb stew, posole, chili &mdash; there are lots of soups, stews and slow-cooked braises that really do taste better after they've had a cooling stay in the fridge followed by reheating and second-day service.

  13. Old wok, fresh flavors

    My wok incites a kitchen conundrum: It looks like hell, but it cooks like an angel. My husband says our wok is a beautiful thing; I hide it away from the shiny stove-of-my-dreams for months at a time. Then we start cooking in the wok and wonder why we ever tuck it out of sight. Seafood and bits of meat emerge perfectly browned, and vegetables cook to crisp-tender. Fast.

  19. Dandelions aren't just weeds

    &nbsp;&ldquo;But they&rsquo;re weeds.&rdquo;
     “But they’re weeds.” My much better half is not, shall we say, “adventurous” when it comes to greens: A “real” salad is built around a wedge of iceberg or chopped romaine. Stewed collards are fine for New Year&...

  21. Pining for Danilo's pepper steak

    Q: There was a restaurant called Danilo's in the area of Grand and Milwaukee. They've been closed for about 8 years. They had a terrific item on the menu known as Italian-style pepper steak. Hoping that you may have been familiar with the location and could tell me if there is another establishment serving that item. I believe the old owner's name was Danilo Lenzi
