7. The Front Burner: Grill some greenery to mark summer's end

To everything there is a season, or so it is said. And that includes grilling. Not that you won't venture out on a cooler evening to barbecue some chicken, but autumn is here — almost — and the desire to dine al fresco is waning along with the summer weather.

  13. Blum Ranch in Acton keeps it old school

For a vision from a century ago, when farms covered Los Angeles County, there's no better time machine than Blum Ranch in Acton, southwest of Palmdale. Just off the 14 freeway, about an hour north of downtown, its 40 acres of peach and pear orchards are the largest deciduous fruit planting so close to the city. The century-old stone house, the streamlined 1940 tractor, the ancient, creaky trees and the fruit they produce are as defiantly old school as the owners, Ray and Elizabeth Billet.

  19. Setting up your charcuterie and cheese party

The art of charcuterie is thousands of years old, with its origins dating back to Roman times. With a newly modern approach to meat making it possible to find cured meats that are well made, and even healthy, charcuterie has become increasingly popular. Look for artisanal charcuterie that uses high–quality and natural ingredients, preferably organic, and hormone–free meats with fine seasonings, salts and herbs. There's much to choose from: cured meats, pâtés, terrines and gourmet sausages. Alberto Sollis, of The Rogers Collection, helped us narrow down our choices to Spanish charcuterie and cheese. For charcuterie, he suggests Jamón Ibérico, also called pata negra, a cured ham produced mostly in Spain; Serrano Ham, or mountain ham, is a dry–cured Spanish pork generally served raw sliced thinly or diced; and Cured Pork Tenderloin, from one of the leanest meats available.
