9. Country cousin far from simplistic

When word went out that Jason Paskewitz and Ryan O'Donnell were planning Rustic House, a sequel to their successful first venture, the sophisticated Gemini Bistro, I figured the pair wanted a simpler follow-up restaurant, something that would let them expand without overexerting themselves.

  13. Local chefs tackle Girl Scout cookie challenge

This year marks the 100th anniversary of the founding of Girl Scouts by Juliette Low in Savannah, Ga. In honor of the centennial, The Herald-Mail asked several local restaurants to develop recipes for adults using Girl Scout cookies, one of the most visible aspects of Girl Scouts. One of these recipes uses alcohol, which we recommend should not be shared with a Girl Scout.

  15. Sweet Euphoria

The Aztecs called it the food of the gods. But for modern-day romantics, chocolate is the food of love: a rich, sensual treat no Valentine’s Day is complete without. But what some couples may not know is that eating chocolate releases phenylethylamine, a chemical nicknamed the “love drug,” to the brain. It’s the same chemical that stimulates the euphoric sensation you feel when you express love for each other.

  21. Need a hostess gift when invited to dinner? The Times' S. Irene Virbila has a few ideas

When I spent some months in Venice, Italy, years ago, my friend Paolo would show up at dinner parties with prosciutto. I'm not talking about a paper packet of sliced ham but a whole prosciutto di San Daniele, the famous ham from Friuli, cured with the foot on. The host would hand him a glass of Prosecco, he'd pull his well-traveled prosciutto out of the bag and proceed to carve off slices as his contribution to the cicchetti (antipasti) spread. Brilliant. And after, it would go home with him to be trotted out for the next dinner party.
