  1. Impatiens downy mildew can over winter in flower bed and containers

Last summer homeowners and landscapers alike did battle with impatiens downy mildew (Plasmopara obducens) which affects garden impatiens (impatiens walleriana). This is not the same downy mildew that affects vegetables and other ornamental plants. In fact is doesn't even affect New Guinea impatiens.

  3. Have a stress-free Passover dinner

Seder dinner may be the most beloved meal of the Jewish year, but it’s also the most daunting: All the elements must be ready to go — and then abandoned — for the hour or two it takes to get through the prayers, singing and stories in the first part of the seder.

  5. Lovin' lentils

In the crowded world of legumes, we may ignore lentils in the rush to buy red kidney beans for chili, navy beans for ham-flavored soup, black beans, pinto beans, split peas and more.

  13. The Best Dishes of 2012

Damn, I ate well this last year. And apparently so often, I've had to scroll through of a year's worth of photographs to unearth some gems deserving the spot-light. The photos reminded me that the best of what I cooked at home was created with fresh-picked vegetables from Sport Hill Farm in Easton, three miles down the road from my house. Likewise, of the many restaurants I checked out last year, the most memorable dishes were created by chefs who use seasonal and local ingredients. I'm very grateful to the farmers, chefs, cooks and restaurateurs.

"I hope you have a plan. Because if you don't, that half hog can kick your (butt)." Thus came the warning from food writer Michael Ruhlman when I told him that, inspired by his new book, I planned to buy and butcher my first half hog. In "Salumi: The...

  21. Curry braised lamb shanks

Nothing takes the chill out of January like a house filled with the aroma of slow-cooking goodness. In our house, that aroma frequently includes a touch of curry spice. On braised meat, on roasting veggies and simmered in a pot of stew or soup.

  23. A sea of choices

It's not always easy to get more fish into our diets. After all, most of us don't have fresh fish markets in the neighborhood. Mostly, I find myself at my local supermarket pondering dinner options at the seafood counter.
