As a parent who has been fortunate to have had two children progress through Howard County's excellent public schools I was disappointed to learn that Superintendent Foose's Race to the Top grant application did not make the list of finalists. Then I was outraged to read that union President Paul Lemle thought we were "better off without it".

What? Really? Better off not getting an infusion of $30 million into our school system?

I found his reasons bogus in the extreme — HCEA talking points. Surely this can't be the thinking of the dedicated teachers I know who want more, not fewer resources, for our students.

Bravo to Renee Foose and the five school board members who had the courage of their convictions to give the application a chance.
