The band: Kevin Scott Joiner — guitar, vocals
Vinny Carrasco — drums, percussion, vocals
Been together: 10 months
How they got started:
Carrasco and Joiner were scheduled to work together with a bass player to do a Stax Records Soul Revue show in Valparaiso last year when the gig got canceled. A few months later, Joiner contacted Carrasco to put together a band for a gig featuring Joiner’s original songs and some soul covers.
“We started rehearsing,” Carrasco says, and it sounded pretty good without a bass player … so we did the gig. That gig went so well and we decided to keep on going.”
Behind the name: Joiner had the name “Hard Soul” picked out prior to the ill-fated Stax Soul Revue gig, and it stuck when they set out as a duo.
Genres: Soul, original alternative rock.
Influences: Otis Redding serves as one of Joiner’s primary influences along with performers on the Stax Records label. Carrasco lists West African percussion-driven music, Mamady Kieta, Mickey Hart, and the bands Rush and Phish as influences.
CD: “Hard Soul”
Where to find the CD: ReverbNation, or go to the “Hard Soul” Facebook page.
Upcoming gigs:
7 p.m. Friday at The Pool, inside South Bend Central High Apartments, downtown South Bend.
