James Cook called the Sandwich Islands. Come to think of it, the only one missing is a Sandwich Isles Sandwich Festival.

Hawaii's Big Island has more than beaches for vacationers

12 places to visit in 2012

Oahu: As the Obamas remind us yearly, you need not jump to Maui or Kauai in order to experience that Hawaiian getaway feeling. Though Oahu's big city, Honolulu, has urban challenges, and the crowded towers of Waikiki are a bit much for some people, Oahu's assets are many, beginning with Waikiki's gentle waves and the sight of Diamond Head. There's also the slower pace of life on the windward side, including the enclave of Kailua, where the president's family has vacationed repeatedly. Now add Disney's 21-acre Aulani resort, which opened in August.

Kauai remains a popular film location

October 23, 2011

Kauai remains a popular film location

Kauai has been a favorite film location since it stood in for Bali Hai in the 1958 movie version of "South Pacific." It has been Maui in the Adam Sandler-Jennifer Aniston romantic comedy "Just Go With It" (released this year), and it played the Caribbean in "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides," the fourth of the Johnny Depp swashbucklers. Sometimes it even plays itself. In "The Descendants," which is to open next month, a father (George Clooney) takes his children to Kauai after his wife is incapacitated. "Every location is the real place," says co-producer George Parra. Here's a guide to movie sites (some on private property), with tips on how to explore them from film location manager Angela Tillson, who has been guiding film scouts around the island for 23 years.

Coffee grown on the Big Island's rainy side

Some of the world's most famous coffee is grown along the Kona Coast, on the leeward side of the Big Island, where plantations big and small nurture their well-deserved reputations. Now, though, a band of small growers on the opposite side of the island, a 2 1/2 hour drive, is seeking its day in the sun — at least figuratively.

Volcano expedition is a chopper ride to remember

I could see a river of flame below me, a glowing red lava tube that sliced across the jagged black landscape of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.
