  7. Boys Athlete of the Week: Walt Moody, River Hill, basketball

    In three victories for River Hill against Howard County competition last week, the 6-foot-4 senior forward averaged 22 points and nine rebounds. In a 70-58 win over Howard on Jan. 7, Moody finished with 24 points, including three 3-pointers, and 11 rebounds. He followed that with 21 points and eight rebounds in a 55-51 overtime win against Centennial, going 9-for-10 from the free-throw line and scoring 11 of the Hawks' 15 points in overtime. On Friday, he scored 21 points and added eight rebounds in the team's 57-51 victory over Reservoir. In his third season on varsity, Moody averages 20.9 points, 8.2 rebounds, 3.8 assists and 2.4 steals. He has led the Hawks (11-2 overall, 9-1 Howard County) to a dramatic turnaround after the team went 4-19 last season. Moody, who also played football until focusing solely on basketball this year, has a 3.4 weighted grade point average. He plans to play basketball in college and has drawn interest from Salisbury, Frostburg State, Shenandoah and St. Mary's.
