1. Observations after first Ravens OTA viewing

The Ravens will finish up the first of three voluntary offseason team activities today, though they’ll do it outside the glare of the media. Yesterday was the one day for media availability, and while no big news came out of it, it was still good to see some action after so much attention has been placed on off-the-field stories over the past couple of months. Making any conclusions after a two-hour practice -- which did not include some of the team’s top veteran players, including running back Ray Rice, linebacker Ray Lewis and safety Ed Reed, and featured most of the players in jerseys, gym shorts and no shoulder pads -- would be foolish. However, I think it is appropriate to make a couple of observations:

  5. Continuity will be key for the Ravens offense

The most significant offensive additions the Ravens made this offseason were free-agent wide receiver Jacoby Jones and a pair of rookie linemen in Kelechi Osemele and Gino Gradkowski. Their personnel losses include Pro Bowl guard Ben Grubbs and veteran backups in running back Ricky Williams and wide receiver Lee Evans.

  9. Game 2: Ravens fall flat in 26-13 loss to Titans

Joe Flacco rolled to his right and found no open receiver, so he turned around and ran back to the left. With no better options visible there, Flacco pivoted and finally threw the ball away just before being leveled by Tennessee Titans defensive end Derrick Morgan.

  11. DeCosta promoted to Ravens' assistant general manager

When several teams, including the Oakland Raiders and Chicago Bears, expressed interest in Baltimore director of player personnel Eric DeCosta for their general manager opening earlier this offseason, the Ravens responded by giving their long-time executive a contract extension and a title change.

  13. Game 17: Ravens hold on to beat Texans, advance to AFC championship game

They have played together for so long that certain things become expected. So even after a regular season in which Ed Reed had just one interception in his final 15 games, Ray Lewis felt it coming, simply because he's seen it so many times before.

  19. Mike Preston: It doesn't matter how Suggs hurt his Achilles

There has been a lot of speculation that Ravens Pro Bowl outside linebacker Terrell Suggs injured his Achilles tendon while playing basketball. Suggs has denied that it happened that way, but who cares? If that tendon was tight and going to tear, it made no difference if he was playing basketball, wrestling, practicing karate or running sprints.

  23. Handing out superlatives for this Ravens draft class

Now that I have had a couple of days to defragment my brain after a hectic NFL draft weekend, I figured I would hand out superlative style-evaluations of the Ravens’ eight-player draft class. These are just the opinions of one man (though it’s a man who spent much of the past two months researching draft prospects). Feel free to leave your assessments or reactions to mine in the comments section below.
