1. Capitals fire Boudreau, replace him with former captain Dale Hunter

The Washington Capitals on Monday fired coach Bruce Boudreau, who won 200 games faster than any coach in modern NHL history but stumbled regularly in the playoffs despite a talent-laden lineup featuring two-time league MVP Alex Ovechkin. Boudreau was...

3. Scoring low but excitement high at Baltimore Hockey Classic

The outcome wasn't what fans had hoped for, but Baltimore rocked the red Tuesday night.
The outcome wasn't what fans had hoped for, but Baltimore rocked the red Tuesday night. On the night when professional ice hockey returned to Baltimore for the first time since 1997, a sellout crowd of an announced 11,082 fans packed 1st Mariner Arena...

Each morning, Monday through Friday, I'll hook you up with reading material to skim through as you slug down coffee and slack off at the start of your workday -- that way I'll have an excuse to do the same at the start of mine.

7. Green sends Caps past Hurricanes in opener, 4-3

The Washington Capitals' 2011-12 season opener certainly wasn't pretty. They gained and relinquished two separate one-goal leads and the Carolina Hurricanes forced overtime with less than two minutes remaining. But in the extra session the Capitals found...

9. Your turn: What should be the Capitals' top offseason priority?

The Capitals have started to retool their roster after another early playoff exit. They have re-signed center Brooks Laich, traded for power forward Troy Brouwer and added a few draft picks to their minor-league system. Expect more changes -- perhaps more significant ones -- after owner Ted Leonsis said the Capitals "want to change and improve" this offseason. He also suggested that some trades could be in the works.

11. What has happened to the Washington Capitals?

Something is acutely wrong with the Washington Capitals right now. You would think that a last minute loss to the Nashville Predators and an overall stretch of very porous play would do something to raise the team’s indignation level a smidge above lukewarm. Nope. The Capitals seem perfectly content playing non-noteworthy hockey, and by that, we mean playing with the emotional intensity of the lead in ‘Weekend at Bernie’s.’ Doctor please check the patient and let us know if you can find the pulse.

19. Caps recap: Capitals showed true grit in win over Penguins

The pre-Super Bowl showdown between the Capitals and the Penguins was significantly lacking sizzle with Pittsburgh stars Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin out of the lineup. But that doesn't mean the Capitals' 3-0 win on Sunday wasn't impressive.

21. Five players the Caps should target at the deadline

Expect the Capitals, who trail the Lightning by five points in the Southeast Division, to be players before the NHL's trade deadline on Feb. 28. As it's currently constituted, this team doesn't appear to be capable of going on a deep playoff run (though nothing should be discounted as long as Alex Ovechkin is in the scarlet and white).
