Highlights
Mike Singletary

Mike Singletary is the head coach of the San Francisco 49ers. He was a second-round pick of the Chicago Bears in 1981, a seemingly undersized linebacker from Baylor who was selected to a Bears-record 10 straight Pro Bowls beginning in 1983. Behind perhaps the greatest defensive line in franchise history (Richard Dent, Dan Hampton, Steve McMichael, William Perry), Singletary was twice named NFL defensive player of the year and was selected to the NFL Team of the Eighties by the Hall of Fame Board of Selectors. Singletary missed just two games in his 12 NFL seasons, all with the Bears and was selected as the NFL Man of the Year in 1990 for his combined excellence and performance on and off the...  Show more »

Considered by coordinator Buddy Ryan to be one of the great students of the game and the Bears' defense, Singletary was briefly considered by Dick Jauron for an assistant's position with the Bears but was not hired and eventually became defensive coordinator of the San Francisco 49ers.  « Show less

  1. Preston: Ray Lewis will retire as the greatest middle linebacker to play the game

There is really only one more appropriate ending for the Ravens' Ray Lewis, and that won't come for another five years when he takes his place in the NFL Hall of Fame as the greatest middle linebacker ever.

  7. Friedgen, Terps have trio to cheer for in Super Bowl

Each Sunday, Ralph Friedgen flips through the NFL games on television, looking for kids he coached at the University of Maryland. Watching them play now brings him back, maybe to a practice where he pulled one of them aside for one-on-one teaching or to quiet moment away from the field. He thinks about how they've grown.
