Rock Island Cafe brings breakfast/lunch favorites back to Wichita

Rock Island Cafe closed its doors almost 17 years ago, and former manager Kirsten Teague has decided it's time to reopen. She quietly opened the restaurant at its new location at the beginning of June. Rock Island Cafe may have moved, but they're still serving up the same menu of Wichita favorites.

One of the most popular items is the Rock Island Chicken Salad. It's sweet, creamy taste has been missed by many. In fact, Teague says a customer came in on opening week to say she'd been waiting almost 20 years to taste the chicken salad again. You can enjoy this old favorite two different ways- in a pita with the Santa Fe Chicken Pita, or over lettuce with the Santa Fe Chicken Salad.

If chicken salad isn't your thing, don't worry- the menu at Rock Island Cafe is stuffed full of delicious favorites. For breakfast, stop in and grab a fresh, home-made muffin- the restaurant bakes three different flavors every morning. If you have time to sit down and eat, try their cheesy eggs- a special blend of eggs, cream cheese and spices, served with a fruit cup and honey wheat toast. (This was a favorite of The CW Crew's Emily.)

For lunch, Rock Island Cafe has an extensive list of sandwiches to choose from. There are a few original stand outs: the Conductor's Ham & Turkey is an onion bun stuffed with ham, turkey, smoke Gouda cheese, mayonnaise, sliced tomato and lettuce; the Smokey Valley Open Faced Turkey Sandwich has smoked turkey, shredded lettuce, Dijon mustard, tomato and sprouts served on a slice of honey wheat bread, served with pasta salad or pita chips.

Rock Island also has a couple dishes that cater to the vegetarian crowd. The scrumptious Atlantic Ava-Cada has avocado spread, Havarti cheese, cucumbers, green olives, green peppers, tomato, lettuce and alfalfa sprouts stuffed in honey wheat bread. Or try the Chicago Great Western Cheese Croissant, which has Havarti cheese, smoked Gouda cheese, assorted veggies and taragon mayonnaise on a croissant.

If for some reason, out of all the amazing sandwiches on the menu, you can't find something you love, Rock Island Cafe also has a build your own sandwich, the Pullman Car Sandwich. You get to choose your bread, spread, meat, cheese and veggies.

Rock Island Cafe is only open for breakfast and lunch, Monday-Saturday from 7 am - 2 pm. Breakfast is served until 10 am on Monday-Friday and until noon on Saturday.

Rock Island Cafe offers delivery anywhere in the city for a minimum order of $20.
