  1. Buck Showalter shows off laid-back Dallas style

Few Americans are on the road more than the manager of a major league baseball team. But Buck Showalter, the Orioles' famously persevering manager, rarely stays put even in the offseason, when he's canvassing the country for new talent. After all, being stagnant would never have earned him two American League Manager of the Year awards or helped him turn around the Orioles' 14-year stretch of losing seasons.

  3. With FlowerMart as backdrop, Mount Vernon is thriving

As many times as it rolls around, I never outgrow the FlowerMart, which opened Friday and runs through Saturday. It's held in May and timed to take advantage of the best part of Maryland's spring. Any event that draws so many families, especially babies in strollers, mothers and grandmothers, to a hallowed Baltimore neighborhood gets my vote, even if, truth be told, I am not much of crab cake fancier.

  5. Happiness turned to horror for Marylanders at Boston Marathon

    — At 2:42 p.m. on Monday — just minutes before the first bomb exploded along the marathon course — Carol Downing's son-in-law and daughters were positioned perfectly to watch her run past the blue-and-yellow finish line painted across Boylston Street.

  11. City to raze homeless encampment near JFX

Venus Wiles would rather sleep in a tent stuffed with blankets and all her worldly possessions on the side of the Jones Falls Expressway with her boyfriend, Michael Spence, than stay the night in an emergency shelter.

  15. Early 20th-century marathons found a starting line in Laurel [History Matters]

From 1909 until 1939, marathons were run from Laurel to Washington or Baltimore. After the first few marathons, they not only became AAU-sanctioned, but the race was one of the qualifying marathons for the U.S. Olympic team. There was one constant in all those years: The starting line was in front of the Laurel Hotel on the corner of Main Street and Washington Pike (Route 1southbound).

  17. Back Story: Buildings are gone but not forgotten

Gregory J. Alexander and Paul Kelsey Williams have combed through photo archives, and the result of their labors is "Lost Baltimore," which is a painful reminder of notable buildings that fell victim, for the most part, to fire or urban renewal.
