The level of competition at the 6A regional meet in Dodge City allowed them to shine. Dodge City's Bryce Sonday swept the discus competition with a gold medal distance of 160 feet and two inches.   13. Derby earns third consecutive state berth

    The Garden City softball team could not have asked for better circumstances while competing for a 2013 state tournament berth. With a regular season record of 16-3 the Lady Buffs earned the No. 2 overall seed for the regional tournament. That meant a home field advantage as well as bypassing the top-seed Wichita Northwest and powerhouses such as Maize and Heights until state. However, a group of determined Derby Lady Panthers with a No. 5 seed came out firing and proved that strength of schedule is more important than records. Derby defeated Garden City in the 6A South Central regional championship game 14-6.
