  1. LETTER: Perpetual War Not Answer To Terrorism

President Obama's speech Thursday was one of the greatest and most logical cases made against justifying war as a solution to terrorism [May 24, news, "Obama Curbs Drone Strategy"]. His speech made the clearest distinction between terrorist...

  3. On Benghazi, Obama vs. Republicans again

This post has been updated as indicated below.
Maybe because President Obama said so many other things in his speech Thursday -- about drones, Guantanamo and a “new phase” in the war against terrorism -- a reference to Benghazi didn’t attract much attention. But, at the risk of over-...

  5. Drone program had largely run its course

WASHINGTON — President Obama took pains to place the new restrictions on targeted killings he announced Thursday into the context of a broad reappraisal of the nation's anti-terrorism effort. Drones are not "a cure-all for terrorism," he said in...

  9. A new response in the war on terror

Better late than never, President Obama has moved to establish more rigorous standards for the targeted killings of Americans and foreigners alike away from a battlefield. The need for what he called "strong oversight of all lethal action" was one theme of the president's address Thursday at National Defense University. Another, equally overdue, was his renewed determination to close the prison at Guantanamo Bay and expedite the repatriation of dozens of inmates who have languished there despite being cleared for release.

  13. 'Fast & Furious 6' revels in childlike love of vehicular mayhem ★★★ 1/2

“Fast & Furious 6,” — which surely maxed out Universal’s tank-top budget for the year, and sustains its joyful, unpretentious ridiculousness so perfectly that I secretly hoped the “6” meant “hours long,” — ends with a disclaimer, the sort of small-type legalese that typically arrives at the tail end of the closing credits. Except here it’s at the immediate end of the story, like a Viagra warning/promise of a potential nine-hour, uh, adrenaline rush.

  15. Editorial: Obama won't ground aerial strikes that kill terrorists. Good.

President Barack Obama has taken a lot of heat over America's targeting of terrorists overseas with lethal drone strikes. Critics argue that the secret CIA-run program provokes political backlash in Pakistan, Yemen and Somalia, outweighing the value of the terrorists killed. That the attacks too often go awry and inadvertently kill innocents. That there's no effective oversight. And that Obama hasn't given Congress sufficient legal rationale for the aerial strikes.

  17. Torture, drones, indefinite detention breeding home-grown terror?

The broad-daylight hacking death of a soldier in London this week was Britain’s Marathon Moment. Like the twin bombings at the race finish line in Boston last month, Wednesday’s attack by two machete-wielding men spouting venomous threats to...

If you're the child of an immigrant, like me, or perhaps an immigrant yourself brought here as a child, you know what it's like to have one foot planted in the old world and the other planted in the new, in this amazing, sometimes frighteningly free American culture.
