9. Make your own Baconfest

Bacon dumplings. Bacon pie. Bacon tacos. Bacon cotton candy. These are just a few of the smoky, salty treats that local chefs plan to serve at Baconfest Chicago this weekend. Unfortunately, the lure of these pork-packed dishes proved so great that the event sold out the same day tickets went on sale. If you're not among the fortunate few that will be stuffing yourself silly at the UIC Forum on Saturday, you still can get your fix. These restaurants are serving the same or similar Baconfest dishes—but for a limited time, so don't wait too long. Find even more options on Baconfest's own Do-It-Yourself Baconfest Guide at baconfestchicago.com.

11. Bring on brunch

Though Sunday brunch is a year-round option, warm and sunny weather is what brings out the crowds. I can attest to that, having spent most of the last 10 fairly miserable (weatherwise) weekends hitting one brunch after another; I don't think I found a single crowded dining room during all of February and March (Easter excepted), and reservations certainly were no problem. Brunch-friendly temperatures will be with us soon enough, and when they arrive, here are a few brunch spots, old and new, that will be worth checking out. Better still, visit them now, when tables are still easy to secure (Mother's Day excepted).

For RedEye
"Do you remember when it was 80 degrees in March last year?" Yup, that might be the most common complaint muttered by coat-clad Chicagoans this spring. Sure, summer didn't come early this year as it did last, but that hasn't stopped dozens of...

19. Descent into chaos

A day after the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated 45 years ago, a 4-year-old girl, abandoned and crying, stood in front of a burning building a few blocks from the West Side apartment where the civil rights leader had lived during his open-housing crusade. She was soaked from one of the hose lines firemen were directing at blazes up and down Roosevelt Road. Even as they burned, stores were being looted of groceries, clothing, liquor and television sets.
