Uniondale

Beginnings: Uniondale was long a part of the great Hempstead Plains. But the portion that became Uniondale has a lengthy military history. It was an enlistment center during the Revolution, an infantry training center during the War of 1812 and a camp during the Civil War, the Spanish-American War and World War I. The establishment of Mitchel Field on its northern edge grew into an Army Air Corps base during World War II and an Air Force base until 1961. It was known first as Turtle Hook, because of the turtles that crawled out of nearby ponds. In 1853, residents decided Turtle Hook was an "unsuitable'' name and changed it to Uniondale. There is no record of why that name was chosen.
