1. York and James City counties are tops in health

Even with an adult obesity rate of 28 percent, York County ranked as the fifth healthiest locality in Virginia, as rated by the Robert Wood Johnson and the University of Wisconsin Population Health Institute in its annual "County Health Rankings & Roadmaps," released Wednesday. The rankings only compare cities and counties within a state and do not offer a national analysis.

  7. Civil War diary tells of Hampton Roads' past

Have you ever kept a journal or a diary? I have distinct memories of writing nightly during my adolescence and teen years, at first in a small pink book that I locked, and later in whatever type of notebook I picked up at the grocery store. I lost track of the journals as the years passed, and I’ve often wondered what would happen if my children were to get their hands on some of what I wrote. What would they think? Would it help them to see me in a different light?

A total of 66 volunteers of all ages came out recently to plant 450 tree seedlings at Bethel Landfill in Hampton. The seedlings were planted in the buffer strip between the landfill and I-64. 23. Today's young readers are tomorrow's authors

I don’t remember the first book I read, but I do have clear memories of sitting with a book in my lap, turning the cardboard-like pages and sounding out the words. (Yes, they taught phonics in my day.) The earliest books I remember reading are the masters – you know, like Dr. Seuss and “Green Eggs and Ham.” I can still recite parts of that book, and I’ll bet many of you can, too.
