RICHMOND, Va. (AP) -- An ornate Qing Dynasty Chinese table clock sold for nearly $3.8 million at an auction of the country estate of socialite and vintner Patricia Kluge, and bidders worldwide also paid top prices for paintings, furniture and other pieces in the collection.
The clock was purchased Tuesday by a Chinese collector for more than triple its $1 million estimated top value after a heated telephone bidding session.
The timepiece is one of the top pieces in the two-day event at Albemarle House in Charlottesville.
Sotheby's expects about $9 million in sales, but surpassed that by the end of the first day and was up to $14 million by Wednesday afternoon.
