GRAND HAVEN - It's one of the most prestigious dog shows in the world and a local Chihuahua won "best of breed" in the competition.
Gloria Johnson of Grand Haven was invited to show her two year old Chihuahua "DeeDee" at the Westminster Dog Show at Madison Square Garden in New York City on Tuesday.
To her surprise, the dog won "best of breed" for the Chihuahua smooth coat competition.
"Oh, we were just so excited," said Gloria Johnson.
Johnson says it takes a lot of work to get a dog into the prestigious competition. She calls in the "kentucky Derby" of the dog world.
Johnson does training with the animal for anywhere from 15 minutes to an hour everyday. Plus, she gives the animal baths everyday and comes her hair daily.
"To walk in there and to see the lights and the people and all the stuff that goes along with it and all of the history, it is really overwhelming," said Gloria Johnson.
Gloria and her companion won't be returning to West Michigan anytime soon, however. She's already in Indianapolis for the rest of the week to attend another dog competition.
