AAA Mid-Atlantic says nearly 925,000 Virginians will travel this holiday period, starting Thursday, August 30th to Monday, September 3rd.

More than 800,000 Virginians will travel by car and over 73,000 will fly.

That's up by 1.8% since last year.

Manager of Public and Gioverment Affair for AAA Mid-Atlantic, Martha Meade, says gas has increased. "Gas prices have experienced a rapid climb since July and have surpassed what motorists were paying at the pump last year."

There's good news for those who plan to travel by airplane: AAA says airfares have decreased by four percent over last year.

 

Here's some tips for your car if you'll be driving long-distance:

Check all fluids in your car

Inspect tires, tire pressure and check for a spare and jack

Make sure windshield wipers work properly

Avoid packing heavy because this will use more gas

Use a gps but don't forget your map just in case
