are dealing with a problem at dump sites. WDBJ7's Frankie Jupiter is live tonight with more on this trash trouble and the costly cleanup. Chris, the problem is illegal dumping. This site here off of Grassy Hill Road is relatively clean. And that's because the county spent over 90-thousand dollars last year cleaning up at box sites like this one and they're still continuing to do so. People are leaving trash, brush, furniture all on the ground. And to make matters worse, contractors are even using the sites for their own construction debris. Don Smith/Public Works Director; Please don't put stuff on the ground, put it in the box. If it's not household waste please bring it to the landfill. That's the main item. That's what's costing tax payers of Franklin County a lots of money. Smith tells me that Greenbox use is free for Franklin County residents and it's intended for residential household waste only. He says another problem is that lumber and construction debris in the greenboxes can damage the frontload trucks. To fix that costs around 10,000 dollars. The sheriff's office is also taking this seriously. Deputies are writing tickets. County officials say if you're caught dumping illegally it could cost you $2500 or a year in jail or both.
