Western Community College has an event this weekend that benefits our nation's veterans. wdbj7 Mornin's Alison Parker is live on campus this morning to tell us about this Saturday's Boots2Books 5 k race. All the proceeds from the event go toward the Veterans Assistance Fund at Virginia Western. Carole Tarrant joins us again. What is the Veteran's Assistance Fund? The Veterans Assistance Fund is an emergency fund for military and veteran students to provide financial support to cover the cost of books, emergency educational expenses or other financial needs in the case of a life- changing event and to support the mission of the Armed Forces Student Association. The mission of Armed Forces Student Association is to assist new military and veteran students with adapting to college and civilian life. The Association provides a positive social environment for new military and veteran students as well as brings an understanding of military life to the faculty and other students at Virginia Western. Members of the community can find information about supporting the Veterans Assistance Fund by visiting wdbj7.com. Think back to late last year -- the government shutdown caused the military tuition assistance program to be put on hold for a while. It was reinstated -- but to have that uncertainty, what's that like for a member of the military or a veteran? How else can people donate or get involved if a 5k isn't their thing? Just a reminder -- the 5k is at 9:00 Saturday morning at Virignia Western. You can find all the information on our website, WDBJ7.com.
