A spokesperson for Appalachian Power says the massive power outage following Friday's severe storm is the worst damage the company has ever seen.

"Well it's going to be an effort that's going to last all week, and into next weekend, I'm sorry to say," Appalachian Power spokesperson Jeri Matheney said.

Matheney said this is the most customers without power the company has ever had. As of 6:15 p.m., 213,631 customers were still without power in Virginia.

Additionally, Dominion Virginia Power has 563,878 customers without power as of 6:30 p.m. Saturday.

Matheney says Appalachian Power expects to get customers back in power anywhere from Tuesday through Saturday.

"I do have to say Roanoke County is one of those counties where we may not get every last customer back on until Saturday," Matheney said.

Along with Roanoke County, Matheney said the counties of Amherst, Bedford, and Botetourt were badly damaged and may not be back up until Saturday.

"We regret having to say that, but we do think it's important that people plan for what they will do during this time," Matheney said.

More than 1,500 of Appalachian Power's tree removal workers line mechanics and contractors are continuously working to help restore power. Additionally, the boat barrier at the Smith Mountain Lake Dam has been repaired. The dam was damaged Friday night. It helps keep boaters away from the dam.

The fire killed William and Edith Benton. The couple was in their 90's.

When the electricity came back on, the power line apparently sparked a fire that quickly spread to the house.

"We talk about tragedies, and this is, but they were an amazing couple with an amazing faith, and they were together to the very end," said Bryon LePere, the Benton's Pastor.

But a water official tells WDBJ7 that your tap water is safe to drink.

The storm knocked out power to the city's wastewater facility around 3 this morning. Partial power was restored around 4 this afternoon.
