UPDATE 6:30 a.m.: Nearly 9,000 Appalachian Power customers are without power in the WDBJ7 viewing area as of 6:25 a.m. Tuesday morning.

The areas with the most outages are Roanoke County (1,183) and Franklin County (1,089 customers).

Across Virginia, there are nearly 20,000 Appalachian Power customers without power. According to Virginia State Police, at 5 a.m. there was a total 183,721 people without power across Virginia.

In West Virginia there are about 55,000 Appalachian Power customers without power.

UPDATE 5:50 a.m.: Power outage numbers continue to climb due to high winds from Hurricane Sandy.

In the WDBJ7 viewing area about 4,000 Appalachian Power customers are without power, as of 4:45 a.m Tuesday. That does not include Tazewell County, where nearly 3,900 customers are without power.

About 900 customers are without power in Roanoke County.

In Virginia there are a total of 16,239 Appalachian Power customers without power in Virginia. That's about 3.1% of all customers in the state. In West Virginia there are nearly 40,000 Appalachian Power customers without power across the state. Click here to see Appalachian Power's outage details.

UPDATE 11:07 p.m.: Appalachian Power says power outage numbers are climbing as the winds pick up. Nearly 10,000 customers are out of power. The effects of Hurricane Sandy will actually be stronger as the night goes on.   More than 2000 were without power in Tazewell County.    Other areas with outages are Amherst County, Bland County, Floyd County, Franklin County, Henry County, Patrick County, Roanoke County and Roanoke City.

3:30 p.m. UPDATE: About 1,400 Appalachian Power customers are without power in Montgomery County, according to the utility's website.

Appalachian Power expects outages in the western part of the state over the next 24 hours. Click here for more outage information from Appalachian Power. Appalachian Power has about 500,000 customers in Virginia. Additional crews are being brought in to assist with restoration efforts.

Dominion Virginia Power estimates up to 1 million customers could lose power over the next few days as Hurricane Sandy barrels by Virginia.

About 9,500 of the utility's Virginia customers were without power Monday afternoon. Most of those are in northern and southeastern Virginia, as well as the Northern Neck area.

The company with about 2.3 million Virginia customers says the three-day window of the storm will make it difficult for crews to restore power until the winds have passed.

As of noon Monday, Appalachian Power says any power outages reported on its website are not storm-related.

At 12:15 p.m. Monday, there were reports of 178 Appalachian Power customers without power.
