Muscular Dystrophy robbed Darcy Meeker of the full use of her hands.

What the condition has taken from the sculptor physically has helped shape her work.  She is a sculptor who works in different medium - cooper, silk, and stone.

What makes the finished work distincitive is the smooth lines and shapes.  She wants her audience to have the urge to touch the pieces, to create a connection.

Muscular Dystrophy is a disability Darcy says she rarely experiences because people are so nice to her.  It too, helps create a connection between her and others.

"I HAD A VERY INDEPENDENT STREAK WHICH I STILL HAVE. BUT I LET PEOPLE HELP ME BE ME insteAD OF HAVING TO BE ME ALL BY MYSELF," Meeker said.  "IT MAY BE THAT IF I WAS FULL STRENGTH AND KIND OF BOSSY AND KIND OF SCARY, THAT WOULDN'T BE THERE. AND IT'S A WONDERFUL THING IN MY LIFE."

There was a time when she wasn't so accepting of other's help.

Darcy says Muscular Dystrophy has given her "enlightened inter-dependence."

Darcy's work is available at Gallery 108 in Roanoke, Miller-off-Main in Blacksburg, and The Gallery in Radford.  In addition to her sculptures, she also makes copper earrings and other jewelry.
