According to the Roanoke Police Department, the man injured in a moped accident Friday in Roanoke has died.

He has been identified as 68-year-old Robert Richards of Roanoke.

The accident happened around 5:30 a.m. Friday morning in the 2000 block of Dale Avenue.

Investigators say Richards was hit by a pickup truck driven by Jonathan Brookman, 37, of Radford. Brookman has been charged with following too closely.

Police say Richards was taken to Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital after the accident. He died at the hospital Saturday.

Dale Avenue was closed down for several hours Friday following the accident.

Dale Avenue in Roanoke is back open following an accident early Friday morning involving a moped and a truck.

Dale Avenue was closed headed east between 19th Street and 21st Street.

The driver of the moped was taken to the hospital.

10:17 a.m. update: Dale Avenue headed east between 19th Street and 21st Street remains closed as officers continue to investigate an accident involving a moped and a truck.

The moped driver was taken to Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital. Investigators have not released the moped driver’s name.

No charges have been filed.

8:10 a.m. update: Roanoke police say a pickup truck hit a moped on Dale Avenue.  The crash happened around 5:30 a.m. in front of Fallon Park Elementary School.

Officers would not say if anyone was seriously hurt. 

The east boung lanes of Dale Avenue are still closed.

The eastbound lanes of Dale Avenue are closed near Fallon Park Elementary School.

Roanoke police said the eastbound lanes were closed between 19th and 21st streets beginning about 6:30 a.m.

A WDBJ7 crew at the scene said it appears police are investigating a crash involving a moped.  A damaged moped, helmet and clothes are in the road.  Police would not release any information at the scene.
