At 655 PM EST...automated river gauges and eyewitness reports indicated flooding along the upper Roanoke River...downstream of Shawsville and Elliston. The rain from today combined with snowmelt will keep the upper Roanoke in flood downstream into Salem through this evening. The river at Lafayette has crested and should start to fall...going below flood stage between 9 PM and 10 PM. Some locations that will experience flooding include... Salem... Salem city... Glenvar... Elliston-Lafayette... and Cave Spring. This includes the Salem Fairgrounds...and Mill Lane in Salem. Precautionary/preparedness actions... Be especially cautious at night when it is harder to recognize the dangers of flooding. If flooding is observed act quickly. Move up to higher ground to escape flood waters.
