Winter is cruising along, and so far measurable snow has been hard to come by.  But snow fans could be in luck in February.

2012 is already showing signs of being an active weather year.

Severe storms in the mid-south, flooding rain on the west coast and warmer than average temperatures here.

January is our coldest month of the year, so highs are going to come up a few degrees this month, but Arctic blasts are still very much in play.  Average highs range from 45 to 50 degrees.

There's often a chill in the air at night!

All across the area, average lows are at or below freezing.  Stiff northwest winds can make those numbers feel colder.

It hasn't been difficult to come up with healthy rainfall amounts lately.

This is the wettest month of the year for Lynchburg and Danville.  February ties with October for Roanoke's wettest month.

Our snow drought wears on, and many of you are patiently waiting.

This is the snowiest month of the year in Roanoke and Lynchburg.  Blacksburg averages over seven inches of snow.  Groundhog Day is Thursday - so we'll see what he has to say about that!

Because the heaviest snow usually falls this month, the full moon is called the "Snow Moon."  Look for it in a week on February 7th.

On the February 25, look for the waxing crescent moon next to Venus in the west.  The pairing should be a pretty sight.  All month you can see the constellation Orion high in the southern sky after darkness falls.

February can be an interesting time for weather, so we'll be watching closely.  Have a great month.
