Due to heavy rain and localized flooding, the U.S. Forest Service has closed portions of the George Washington and Jefferson National Forests on the Glenwood and Pedlar Ranger District.
Personnel are continuing to assess damage from nearly nine inches of rain earlier this week. Inspections are currently in process, which could possibly result in identifying additional damage and/or closures.
The public should use caution while traveling in Botetourt and Rockbridge Counties. The following is a status report for areas affected by flooding on the Glenwood & Pedlar Ranger District.
ROADS
Apple Tree Road (Forest Road #3034): Closed until further notice.
Bobletts Gap Road (Forest Road #4008): Open to high clearance vehicles due to rough conditions.
Hales Fork/Overstreet Road (Forest Road #190): Open to high clearance vehicles due to rough conditions.
North Creek Road – (Forest Road #59): Closed until further notice.
Parkers Gap/Warbler Road (Forest Road #812): Closed from Thomas Mountain Road to the Blue Ridge Parkway at Sunset Fields.
Thomas Mountain Road – (Forest Road #768): Closed until further notice. (All roads remain open to foot travel)
Trails:
Apple Orchard Falls Trail (FT #17): Closed until further notice.
Cornelius Creek Loop Trail (FT #18): Closed until further notice.
RECREATION AREAS
Cave Mountain Lake: Open. Kids Fishing Day at Cave Mountain Lake will continue as planned. This event will take place on Saturday May 19, 2012 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
North Creek Campground: Closed until further notice.
