On December 31, 1970, a low pressure system came out of the Gulf of Mexico and moved northeast toward the Outer Banks. The storm, with plenty of moisture, collided with cold air already in place across the northeast. The end result was a large storm that dumped nearly a foot of snow in some areas of southwest Virginia.
Highs that December 31st only reached 32° in Roanoke. Snow was already on the ground from previous weeks' storms.
While it wasn't an epic snowfall, it did set some records locally.
In Roanoke, nine inches of snow fell on December 31st, with over 8.3 inches falling in Lynchburg.
It landed both cities in the Top 10 snowiest days in December.
New Year's Day, Blacksburg received 5.0" of snow, giving it the top spot for the snowiest New Year's Day on record.
