ROANOKE, Va. (WDBJ) - A busy political season will bring another Election Day Tuesday.

Virginians vote today for House and Senate candidates

Republicans have a statewide Senate primary, but most Virginians would be hard-pressed to name the Republicans who hope to challenge Senator Mark Warner in November.

“That particular primary at the top of the ticket ... is one of the best kept secrets during this election cycle,” said Virginia Tech Professor and WDBJ7 Political Analyst Bob Denton.

Alissa Baldwin, Daniel Gade and Thomas Speciale II are on the ballot.

“It’s incredible, without any advertising, without direct mail, direct marketing. So this is really a real stealth campaign among three candidates who are going to run against a formidable opponent Mark Warner.”

Congressional candidates have made more of a splash. Three of the four Democrats have been advertising extensively on television.

But in a campaign redefined by coronavirus, Denton said turnout across the state could be very low.

“We don’t know about absentee voting, but I would not be surprised if turnout is only three percent, certainly less than five percent,” Denton said. “We may be at historic lows in terms of primaries in contemporary Virginia history.”
