ROANOKE, Va. (WDBJ) - The Skating Center of Roanoke Valley got the drop on 2021 Thursday afternoon.

A 39-year tradition played out at 4 p.m. with the center’s annual balloon drop.

This year was different, with everyone wearing masks and the festivities scheduled earlier in the day.

Chris Conner is the center’s general manager.

“It’s always been a big event. It’s changed a little bit,” Conner said in an interview. “It used to be a bigger nighttime event, but now it’s been a bigger daytime event with families. And we’re all about family entertainment. It’s an honor to be a part of our community where we can celebrate this with everybody.”

Young people crowded onto the floor of the skating center to pop the balloons as they fell.

And many of the balloons contained prizes for the young New Year’s Eve revelers.
