MCLEAN, Va. (WDBJ) - Former Governor Terry McAuliffe has raised more than $6 million in his bid to get his job back, a record amount for this point in the governor’s race.

Monday morning, the McAuliffe campaign said it pulled in more than $4.5 million during the most recent reporting period, and has $5.5 million on hand.

“So to be a successful candidate through a primary season, you probably need $20 to $30 million just to get through a tough primary,” said Virginia Tech professor and WDBJ7 political analyst Bob Denton, “so this certainly speaks a great deal about his name recognition and ability to raise money.”

Other candidates are seeking the Democratic nomination for governor, including Del. Lee Carter, Del. Jennifer Carroll Foy, Lt. Governor Justin Fairfax and Sen. Jennifer McClellan.

We should learn more about their fundraising totals in mid-January when campaign finance reports are due.
