Fallen hiker rescued Sunday in Rockbridge County

ROCKBRIDGE COUNTY, Va. (WDBJ) - UPDATE: According to Rockbridge County Fire and Rescue, a hiker fell about 200 feet off a cliff and into rocks after walking on an icy part of the Appalachian Trail. Crews are expected to utilize a Virginia State Police helicopter to airlift him for treatment of his injuries.

First responders were able to enter the trail near the Rockbridge and Amherst County line, and are looking to exit out near the Hercules area in Amherst County.

Agencies from Rockbridge County, Bedford Couty, Amherst County and Lynchburg responded to the scene.

This comes less than 24 hours after the same agencies responded to another fallen hiker Saturday.

EARLIER STORY: According to Big Island Volunteer Fire Company, the Bedford County Special Operations Command joined them this afternoon for a report of an emergency on the Appalachian Trail.

Crews are working a case of a lost hiker just inside the Rockbridge County border.
