Family, animals including alligator and snakes, displaced after Franklin Co. fire

ROCKY MOUNT, Va. (WDBJ) - Franklin County fire crews extinguished a house fire in the 300 block of Elton Drive Friday.

The report of the fire came in around 3:20 p.m.

Crews found heavy smoke and spent about 45 minutes working to contain the fire, according to fire crews. The building was deemed a complete loss.

According to the Franklin County Fire Marshal, a family of seven is displaced, along with their menagerie.

The house held seven reptiles, including an alligator named Smiley, multiple large snakes, and a number of dogs. All the animals got out safely and are being handled by animal control or the conservation police.

No injuries were reported to any people or animals from this incident.
