ROANOKE, Va. (WDBJ) - Leaders in security at Carilion Clinic say you may want to think twice before answering a call that looks like it’s coming from the hospital.

Rob Perry, Carilion Clinic’s chief information security officer, said Wednesday more people are reporting spoof phone calls. These are scammers who manipulate caller ID, making it look like Carilion Clinic is calling, but is instead a scammer trying to sell you something to get your personal information.

While these kinds of scams have been going on for years, Perry believes increasing pressure from the FCC is leading to farther-reaching attempts by scammers to target more people.

Carilion’s head of information security was live on the WDBJ7+ Digital News Desk Wednesday with some advice.

”If you do receive a phone call from Carilion Clinic, it should be a call that you’re expecting.” Perry said. “And again, if you’re not at all sure, best to just hang up and call back. It may not seem polite but in the stage of scam calls, this is the safest thing to do.”

Perry said you can call your Carilion provider or the main Carilion number at 800-422-8482 to verify the call was legitimate.

If you think you’ve been a victim of this type of call, Perry recommends reporting it to the FCC.
