Construction at Virginia Tech’s new Data and Decision Sciences building underway
BLACKSBURG, Va. (WDBJ) - The first building of Virginia Tech’s Global Business and Analytics Complex is coming to life. Construction has started for one of the four buildings making up the complex.
The Data and Decision Sciences Building will house faculty and classes from multiple colleges, including the College of Engineering, Science, and Business.
Officials say the approximately 115,000-gross-square-foot Data and Decision Sciences Building will bring together computer science, engineering and data-related disciplines to provide opportunities for students, faculty, alumni and even industry leaders to work side-by-side to address some of the world’s significant data challenges.
The goal is to get different disciplines under one roof.
“Talking to students and talking to faculty, everyone wants to have a more active learning environment. The days of students sitting and taking notes as a faculty member writes on the chalkboard are over, and we need to find ways of having the students as engaged as possible,” said Robert Sumichrast, dean of Pamplin College of Business.
The facility will include a multilevel common area, team rooms where students in different majors can work together in specialized labs and more.
The Data and Decision Sciences Building is expected to be complete by 2023.
