AMHERST COUNTY, Va. (WDBJ) - A popular Roanoke County gaming spot could be added to central Virginia.

Officials with Colonial Downs Group have started a petition in Amherst County to help bring a Rosie’s Gaming Emporium to the area.

The goal is to get enough signatures to create a November referendum to allow pari-mutuel wagering.

“And that’s what we’re initiating right now. We will be going around and looking for registered voters in Amherst County to say that they do think this should be on the ballot, they do think it’s something that voters should be able to decide if they want,” said Mark Hubbard, spokesperson.

Hubbard says a facility would be great for the area.

He says it would bring jobs and entertainment for the region.

“People like to have fun. People like to have good jobs. People like to help raise good revenues for their locality, so it’s kind of a win-win-win,” said Hubbard.

Officials in Amherst County agree.

Economic development authority executive director Victoria Hanson says it would also help other businesses.

“That will bring more visitors, more tourism to Amherst County and as they come they’ll be stopping for gas and you know, eating at restaurants, so we’ll see a general economic boost,” said Hanson.

For now, the goal is to get enough signatures and pass a referendum.

Then the company will figure out more specifics from there, like location.

“There are certainly availability for people to come in from outside the county and easily get to the location which would likely be on [Route] 29 in the business district,” said Hubbard.

The company will need 5% of registered voters’ support to get on the ballot.
