BEDFORD COUNTY, Va. (WDBJ) - Virginia State Police report Lee Jackson Highway has reopened, and a mudslide has been cleaned up.

A mudslide closed a section of US 501/Lee Jackson Highway Friday night in both directions in Bedford County.

The slide was reported at at Balboa Street, Gruggett Hollow Road, High Ridge Road, Rocky Meadows Drive, Seminole Way, Skimming Creek Road and Rt. 612N/S.

It was near Big Island, about a mile from the Georgia-Pacific Paper Mill.

VDOT had a crew there and Virginia State Police were notified. Big Island Volunteer Fire company says its crews were dispatched to the mudslide, but had to go through Peter’s Creek Road because trees were blocking the road near the intersection of Camden Road and Big Island Highway. First responders kept traffic flowing until VDOT arrived on scene with a front end loader and cleared the highway.
