RADFORD, Va. (WDBJ) - If you’re looking for something fun to do this summer with the whole family, consider heading to Bissett Park in Radford. RadVentures on the New is the latest business to bring outdoor recreational fun to the New River Valley.

Owner Loren Hunter has lived in Radford off and on about 17 years.

“I’ll move away and do something fun for a few years,” Hunter said. “[But] I always come back. This is home for me.”

And while life’s adventures have taken him around the world, his latest endeavor has brought him to the New River Valley.

“This is RadVentures on the New,” he said proudly.

Opening this weekend, folks will be able to rent kayaks, canoes and inner tubes to get outside and enjoy the beautiful, easy pace of the New River.

“I’ve always been big into the outdoors,” Hunter said. “Hiking, biking, canoeing and kayaking. So anything outside is something I love and enjoy.”

Though he spent the last part of his career as a chef in D.C., Hunter said this change of pace came at just the right time.

“The life of a restaurateur is a very busy life and it was just time for a change,” he said.

So when the city asked him to bring back this kind of outdoor recreation to Radford, how could he refuse?

“It’s more satisfying to just come out here and hang out where people are happy no matter what. They show up and say, ‘oh my gosh, we’re getting on the river! We’re gonna have a great time,’” he laughed.

But don’t think he’ll be staying out of the kitchen. Hunter will soon be adding a food truck to the business.

“We’ll be serving gourmet hot dogs similar to what I had at my very first restaurant in Radford here called West End Dogs,” he explained. “So gourmet dogs, all sorts of crazy, wild toppings on it. Nachos, ice cream, milk shakes, just a lot of really easy food to hang out and enjoy in the park.”

There’s so much beauty that the New River has to offer. Even Annabelle thinks so.

“This is Annabelle,” Hunter said giving his dog a good pat as she stands in a life jacket on the canoe. “She is the company mascot. And she absolutely hates getting on the water as you can tell.”

RadVentures is open Friday-Sunday, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Pre-book your trip here.
