BEDFORD COUNTY, Va. (WDBJ) - The Bedford County Fair is a special part of the community each year.

“It really all came together when you saw families there enjoying it and you saw kids smile on the way to the car and being able to talk to people about the memories they made there,” said BCF Superintendent Joy Powers.

Following its cancellation in 2020 due to the pandemic, the fair was preparing to make its return October 15, but Wednesday morning, the fair’s board made the decision to postpone the event until 2022.

“Our biggest concern surrounded our fair shuttles, which was new this year, but it was going to be required to shuttle in. We didn’t unfortunately see a safe way to get everyone to the fairgrounds while still allowing people to social distance if they would like to.”

No new date has been set, but the fair board is considering an event in the spring.

Powers said, as heartbreaking as the decision was, they feel it was the best decision to keep community members safe. She was also excited for the economic benefit the fair would bring to the community, but is confident it will be just as big, if not bigger, in the spring.

“Even though it’s unfortunate right now, I think in the long run, being able to have those events next year will bring the same, if not even a greater impact.”

A statement from fair officials reads:

“After much deliberation and consideration the Fair Board decided to postpone the 2021 fair due to rising concerns from local health care professionals, leaders, businesses and community leaders. In recent weeks, the Fair Board has monitored the effects COVID-19 has had on Bedford and the surrounding areas daily.

“After hundreds of volunteer hours were spent planning the event, this was a difficult decision that was made in the best interest of the community. It was one not taken lightly nor made quickly; but made to ensure the health and safety of our attendees, volunteers, exhibitors, vendors, sponsors, attractions, and staff. Specifically, the Board was concerned about the close proximity that would be required on shuttles in order for fair goers to attend the fair.”
