MONETA, Va. (WDBJ) - A man drowned at Smith Mountain Lake in Moneta Monday morning, according to the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office.

Around 9:54 a.m., the sheriff’s office was notified of a possible drowning near the 400 block of Channelview Drive. Deputies joined Franklin County Public Safety and Smith Mountain Lake Marine Fire Rescue in responding, and found a man unconscious in the water near a dock. He was pronounced dead after lifesaving measures, according to the sheriff’s office.

His body has been transported to the Medical Examiner’s Office in Roanoke, and an investigation will remain active pending official autopsy results, though there do not appear to be any suspicious circumstances, according to investigators.

A statement from the sheriff’s office reads, “The Office of the Sheriff expresses our deepest sympathies to the victim’s family and friends during this tragic time. Out of respect for the family, the victim’s name will be withheld while other family members are being notified.”
